Rose Box

I made this box out of some pieces of cedar - the kind of strips you can buy to line a closet with.  It's ¼" thick and very easy to work with.  And it smells great.  The box measures 5¾" x 5¾" x 3¼".

I cut the box joint corners using a jig I made for my router table.  The top and bottom fit in place in some dadoes that were cut on the router table as well.  The top slides out toward the front of the box.  The rose design on the lid was done with a wood-burning tool.

My only regret... I tried to put a clear finish on the outside of the box using varnish and it didn't come out very even.  This was the first time I'd used varnish on cedar and I wish I'd just left the cedar alone.  Anyway, the rose on the lid came out wonderfully so I guess I'll just have to make another one.  Ah well... live and learn.
