Died: April 15, 1865, in Washington, D.C.

Notable accomplishments:
- Store operator
- Surveyor
- Local postmaster
- Captain in the Black Hawk War, 1832
- Attorney (self-taught)
- Served in the Illinois legislature, 1834-1841
- U.S. House of Representatives, 1846-1850
- President of the United States, 1861-1865
- Passed the Homestead Act
    This act allowed poor people in the East to obtain
    land in the West.
- Passed the National Banking Act
    This act established a national currency and provided for
    the creation of a network of national banks.
- Signed legislation to charter the first transcontinental railroad.
- Reknowned orator, famous for speeches such as:
    Lincoln's "Lost Speech" - May 29, 1856
    "House Divided" speech - June 16, 1858
    Emancipation Proclamation - January 1, 1863
    Gettysburg Address - November 19, 1863
    Second Inaugural Address - March 4, 1865
- Preserved the Union through victory in the Civil War.
